The Farm program requires a minimum of 550k of conventional (sometimes called lower) memory to reliably run. To find out how much lower memory is available:

• Type "mem" (or "mem/c" for a more detailed listing) from the dos prompt.

Look at the third line from the end of listed information, the Largest executable program size given in the parentheses must be at least 550k.

If you need to free conventional memory:

• Make sure no unnecessary programs or device drivers are being loaded. When in doubt, REM it out, and see if the system can still function.

For a 286 class PC running with DOS5.0 or better.

Load DOS high. The following 2 lines MUST be in CONFIG.SYS, in the same order:

• device=\PATH\himem.sys
• dos=high

Note: replace \PATH\ with the proper path to these files (usually C:\DOS\).

The following require DOS 5.0 or better, and a 386 computer or better.

Free Conventional Memory by moving drivers/programs into high memory.

NOTE: You must reboot your pc before any of the following changes can take effect!

Check your system after making any of the following changes, if you PC functions unreliably afterward, you may have to undo or modify the change.

Load DOS high. The following lines MUST be FIRST in CONFIG.SYS, in this order:

• device=\PATH\himem.sys
• device=\PATH\emm386.exe noems
• dos=high,umb

Note: replace \PATH\ with the proper path to these files (usually C:\DOS\).

Load device drivers into high memory. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file and change device=\DEVICE-DRIVER\ to devicehigh=\DEVICE-DRIVER\

For example change: device=c:\dos\ansi.sys to: devicehigh=c:\dos\ansi.sys

Load programs into high memory. Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT and add "LH " to programs you wish to load high.

Additional changes:

• Reduce the number of BUFFERS in CONFIG.SYS. 20 is usually more than enough.

• Try lowering the size and number of STACKS. Many computers will run just fine with stacks=9,128 (This uses only 1k of memory).

NOTE: The first parameter is the number of stacks, the second is the stack size.

• Set LASTDRIVE to a letter such as J or K, rather than Z. Unless they are on a network, or are using extra or RAM drives, F will do just fine.

• If the CONFIG.SYS file has a "fcbs= n" statement in it, try setting fcbs=0. Fcbs values of greater than 1 are only necessary for some older programs.
