This is in regard to using EMM386.EXE in the CONFIG.SYS file. See your DOS manuals or check your on-line DOS help (by typing HELP EMM386.EXE at the DOS prompt) for information on using EMM386.EXE.
EMM386.EXE Syntax:
DEVICE=[drive:][path]EMM386.EXE [ON|OFF|AUTO] [memory] [MIN=size]
[W=ON|W=OFF] [Mx|FRAME=address|/Pmmmm] [Pn=address] [X=mmmm-nnnn]
[I=mmmm-nnnn] [B=address] [L=minXMS] [A=altregs] [H=handles] [D=nnn]

If the EMS memory parameter is used and is set too low FMS50 will not load. In such cases FMS50 will abend (abort) with a VM error [5251]: insufficient physical memory message.
Examples:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE 512
In the above example only 512k of EMS memory is being allocated. FMS50 will not load. It does not matter how much memory is on your system, apparently Extended memory is not checked if EMS is available.
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.NOEM 512
Even though in the above example NO EMS memory is being allocated. FMS50 will not load.
FMS50 is apparently checking for EMS and believes that not enough memory is available.
Please note that the EMS memory parameter is NOT required in the above example and in fact should not be used!
SOLUTION:
If your system requires EMS memory use the following in your config.sys files.
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM AUTO
