How many records can my farm contain and still be fit on a floppy?
When copying farms to/from disk you can normally expect to fit farms with
3000 records on a 3.5" high density floppy.
2500 records on a 5.25" high density floppy.
If your farm contains more than the standard 44 fields the number maybe slightly less.
Can I run my farm directly from a floppy disk?
Yes, but only with FMS 5.x. We do not recommend running your farms off a floppy because it will cause your program to run very very slowly. Data processing rates of hard disk vs. floppy are about than 30 to 1. With prices currently around $250 for hard drives with over 1 gigabyte (1,000,000 megabytes) of space - you should consider upgrading your hard disk if space is a problem.
How much hard disk space will my farms take?
With FMS 4.x or 5.x the indexes used by the program will take up as much space as the farm. So if your farm is 5 meg in size the various indexes will also take up 5 meg.
With Instant Impact - if you use an index with your farm it's size will increase 50% the first time the farm is indexed (further indexing will not increase the size of your farm). So if your farm was 5 meg originally, after indexing it will be approximately 7.5 meg. NOTE with farms over 1000 records an index is automatically created when ever you sort your farm (for speed reasons).
Can I copy my farms using DOS commands (or another program)?
Yes, but keep in mind that each farm is actually composed of two or more files. All of which are needed by the FMS/Instant Impact programs.
The DOS versions of FMS a farm will have the extension of dbf and dbt. So if your farm is named BIGFARM, you will have two files BIGFARM.DBF and BIGFARM.DBT .
The Windows versions of FMS a farm will have three files with the extensions: mdb, lbd and lay.
